Is Jesus Enough?
By Jeanne Gowen Dennis
Is Jesus enough? I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this question, especially after a friend tragically lost her husband and tearfully told me, “Half of me is gone.”
Is Jesus Enough for Me?
So I’ve wondered. If I lost everything and everyone, would I be satisfied with Jesus alone? It’s not a question of whether Jesus is sufficient. He is the almighty, eternal God; King of kings; the Word who created the universe; all holiness; all righteousness; the One who is fearsome and magnificent beyond human comprehension; loving beyond all measure.
He Must Be
Jesus is all anyone needs. As the Bible says, “He upholds all things by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3).” Jesus described Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Isn’t that immensely more than enough?
I just need to emblazon these truths on the depths of my being. If Jesus is not enough for me, then I’ve forgotten who He is and all He has done for me. I’ve denied God’s power that defeated sin, satan, and death on the cross. The power that raised Jesus from the dead. The power that now, through His saving blood, lives inside of me.
Be Prepared
Granted, we can’t anticipate devastating events that could leave us feeling abandoned or hopeless. But we can prepare for them ahead of time by nurturing and cherishing our relationship with Jesus Christ. The closer we stay to Him, the clearer it becomes that God will keep His promise never to leave or forsake us. Jesus is our strength, our shield, our hope.
Whatever comes, He will give us the grace we need to go on, even when we think we can’t. He keeps His promises, so I know He will see my friend through her fiery trial. And I believe He will give me whatever I need in my own times of trouble.
He Will Never Leave
God’s presence may seem far away when our emotions leave us drained, angry, hopeless, or devoid of feeling. But His Word assures us that Jesus is with us in the midst of our troubles. He said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NKJV). We just have to trust what God’s Word tells us about Him and live in the victory Jesus has already won.
Now it’s your turn to ponder the question. Is Jesus enough for you? What do you do to stay close to Him?
