Best Friends

By Jeanne Gowen Dennis

What are best friends for? I’ve been pondering that as my six-year-old granddaughter tells me about her assortment of “very best” friends.

It reminded me of Laura Miller, my best friend for one glorious year when I was eleven. Laura was the friend who liked me just the way I was, but inspired me to explore beyond myself and my limited horizons. Together we made monumental discoveries like:

  • Bread stored in a secret clubhouse under the stairs gets moldy.
  • Co-writing a Nancy Drew book takes longer than two girls can spare in an adventure-filled summer.
  • Little sisters can’t be depended on to stay awake and shine a flashlight through the window when best friends act out a mystery story in the middle of the night.
  • A beautiful church Christmas pageant can turn sour when both your families love God but worship Him in different ways.
  • Best friends drift apart when one moves away.

I wish I could find Laura now to tell her how special she was in my life then—and in my memories now.

Though Laura was more reserved than I in many ways, if I could, I’d ask her to ramble through the woods with me again, climb a huge tree, and sing a song together at the top of our lungs.

We’d sing in praise of the One who brought us together for a season, the Friend I hope we share now, even from afar—Jesus, the best Friend of all.
