Explore Your Senses with Journaling
by Mary Rand Hess
God gave us five wonderful senses to take in the world around us. He gave us sight to see the faces of those we love. He provided us the gift of smell to enjoy aromas from blooming flowers.
Explore Your Senses
What would life be without the sense of taste while eating our favorite baked treats, or the gift of touch to receive hugs from loved ones? And how about hearing those precious words, “I love you.” These words are music in our ears.
One way to appreciate this awesome gift of the senses is to keep a journal. Journaling is a way of recording memories, thoughts, wishes, and prayers. Keeping a journal of the senses helps us to appreciate God’s everyday miracles.
Journaling
To start, pick out a journal that you like. [Or you can make your own journal.] If the cover of your journal is plain, color or paint the front.
Then choose a favorite writing pen or pencil. And begin observing [looking around and noticing things] and writing.
Take It with You
Take your journal wherever you go. Whether near or far, try to capture the experience of your surroundings.
For example, if you travel to the mountains, think about the different smells, tastes, and sounds you notice.
As the seasons change, how are your senses heightened? Have you ever taken a walk in the rain or snow? How does it feel and look different?
Remember to capture these special moments with family and friends and record them with detail. After you observe something new, pick a quiet place to write about these special memories.
God Gave Us So Much to Experience!
With all the different senses we have, God gave us even that much more to choose from and experience. He gave us so many amazing sights to see, smells to smell, tastes to taste, sounds to hear, and things to touch.
Keeping a journal will remind you of how gracious and giving our Lord is to us all.
