Scripture Cake Story
By Ruth O’Neil
“Kids, grab your Bibles and come to the kitchen,” Mom called.
All three kids came running with Bibles in their hands. Even little Kyle came with his Bible.
“What are we going to do?” asked Anna. She was the oldest and always wanted to know what was going on.
“There’s a new family moving in next door, and I thought it would be fun if we all baked a cake to welcome them.”
Lynn was confused. “Why do we need our Bibles?” she asked.
“We’re going to bake Scripture Cake,” Mom said. “I am going to give you a scripture reference, and the first person to find it in the Bible has to read it to find out what the ingredient should be. Do you understand?”
“Yes.” They answered.
They all held their Bibles. Kyle copied his sisters, even though he was too little to read.
“The first verse is Judges 5:25.”
T he girls scrambled through the pages of their Bibles.
Anna got there first and read silently. “No fair!” she hollered. “This verse mentions three things you could put in a cake. Which one is it?”
“It’s the last one,” Mom said with a smile. “We need a half a cup of that.”
Mom went down her list of references and the girls took turns winning the races to find all the ingredients they would need to bake their cake. Here are all the references she used:
½ cup Judges 5:25
¾ cup Judges 4:19
½ cup Jeremiah 6:20
¼ cup Exodus 16:31
2 Jeremiah 17:11
½ cup 1 Samuel 30:12
2 cups 1 Kings 4:22
½ cup Numbers 17:8
½ teaspoon Amos 4:5
1 teaspoon 2 Chronicles 9:9
Finally, they had all the necessary ingredients and mixed the cake batter. It smelled so good while it was baking. They wanted to eat it themselves, but Mom said no. While it was still warm, they walked next door.
Anna held out the plate. “We baked a cake to welcome you.”
“How sweet,” the new neighbor answered. “Could you come in and share it with us? I’m sure my kids would enjoy meeting you.”
“We’d love to!” Said Anna’s mom with a smile. This is end of the story, but it was the beginning of a new friendship.
